Trees for Tempe
A program to replace community
trees damaged or lost due to storms.
Trees are the best
monuments that a man can erect to his own memory.
They speak his praises
without flattery, and they are
blessings to children yet
unborn.
- Lord Orrery, 1749
About
Trees for Tempe
After the 2008 summer monsoons destroyed more than 400 city-owned trees,
Tempe was left struggling to find the resources needed to replenish its
tree population. Now, with the revival of the Trees for Tempe program,
residents and local businesses can take part in reconstructing the
city’s landscape, one tree at a time!
In 2006, Tempe
found itself in a similar situation after the summer storms. A Tempe
orthodontist began the Trees for Tempe program, pledging to donate money
for each new patient that came into his office to help replace the
uprooted trees. With the unprecedented number of trees lost this past
summer, Trees for Tempe has been expanded so that any individual, group
or business can donate time or money to rebuild our urban forest.
Why trees?
Trees are one of Tempe’s most important assets, offering social,
communal, environmental and economic benefits to our residents today and
well in the future.
According to the USDA Center for Urban Forest Research, trees greatly
benefit a community in many ways, including cleaning the air, filtering
pollution and conserving energy by reducing ambient temperatures.

What can you do?
The Trees for Tempe program welcomes monetary contributions and
donations of time. There is no minimum dollar amount required to donate,
and every cent is appreciated. Residents, organizations and local
businesses can also donate their time to help replant the trees. Either
way you choose to donate, you will have a direct impact on the quality
of life in Tempe now and for years to come!
