Project Mission Statement

To create a destination attraction as the “Best Community History Museum in the West,” we will:

  • Redefine the exhibit area to feature flexible spaces with changing exhibits

  • Integrate new technology with innovative interpretation to dramatically stage the stories of Tempe

  • Increase programming space, creating a versatile multi-use area, and improve the efficiency of non-public space in order to accommodate this expansion

  • Create a dynamic, highly visible museum entrance

  • Create a children’s area that involves families and schools in historical and educational activities

  • Enhance our investment through grants whenever possible.

Our goal is to create a gathering place with flexible, interactive, appealing spaces that attract a larger, more diverse and involved audience that can celebrate Tempe’s past and ponder its future.

Architect

Weddle Gilmore Architects has been selected as the architectural consultant. They will be the principal consultant during the programming and design phases of the project and also will provide construction administration. Gyroscope, Inc. will be the consultant focusing specifically on the design of the new exhibit gallery. The design process will begin in September once the contract has been approved by the Tempe City Council.

Weddle Gilmore focuses on providing design created from cultural, climate and site-specific conditions. They specialize in creating a sense of place that is a combination of environment and community. This firm has been recognized for environmental excellence in design by the Valley Forward organization. Weddle Gilmore is a member of the United States Green Building Council and their staff includes LEED accredited professionals.

Exhibit Designer

Gyroscope, Inc. is a museum planning and exhibition design company that specializes in building deeper connections within each community through the power of experiential exhibitions for all learning styles and ages. Contractor

Brignall Construction Company has been selected as the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR). The responsibility of the CMAR is to insure that the project stays within budget throughout the design phase. The CMAR provides materials and labor cost estimates as the designs are developed so that modifications can be made in a timely manner to address cost overruns. If they perform the CMAR role well, then Brignall will be awarded the construction contract. Brignall Construction Co. (Brignall) has been delivering quality general contracting and construction management services in Arizona for more than 12 years. Brignall offers a full range of preconstruction and construction services and, with hundreds of projects completed, is expert at providing conceptual estimating and competitive pricing on virtually any project type. Brignall has worked with many public schools and community colleges. In addition, they built the exhibit "Home: Peoples of the Southwest" at the Heard Museum and worked on renovations of Grady Gammage Auditorium.

Public Art Studio

UrbanRock Design has been appointed to the design team for the museum. Their responsibilities are to incorporate public art into the project. They are a Los Angeles-based public art studio focusing on integrated works and environments. The studio has been awarded public art commissions in several cities around the United States and has been recognized with awards, honors, publications, and exhibitions.
