The city-wide WiFi network in Tempe is currently shut down.

Gobility, Inc., d.b.a Kite Networks, a Richardson Texas company that was leasing the City street lights to deploy a wireless network in Tempe, was notified January 30, 2008 by the City that, because they had shut down the network, they were in material breach of their license agreement between Gobility and the City of Tempe. They were further notified on February 29, 2008 of failure to cure the defaults, entitling the City to take further appropriate action under the contract.

On April 17, Tempe City Council authorized the City Manager to cancel the agreement with Gobility and revoke the rights under the agreement for the use of city right-of-way to deploy their network.

The City is currently exploring its options. The owners of the network are seeking to sell the assets to another Internet provider that can once again provide wireless service in Tempe. Please check back in the future for more information.
